Found only in grasslands and arid desert scrub, the Scaled Quail will roost in small tree tops or bushes early in the morning. The rest of the day they can be very difficult to find as they scurry on the ground hidden by tall grass clumps. During the winter they form large coveys. This quail eats grass seeds and an occasional insect. The nest is hidden on the ground in a clump of grass or under a low shrub. Where their ranges overlap, the Scaled Quail frequently hybridizes with the Gambel\s Quail.'
The four-digit banding code is SCQU.
